World Malaria Day
The massive scale-up of malaria efforts from 2000–2015 saved 6.8 million lives and decreased the number of malaria deaths by approximately 60% worldwide and by 69% among children under 5 years, according to the World Malaria Report 2015. However, malaria killed an estimated 429,000 in 2015, mainly children under 5 years of age in sub-Saharan Africa. The ever-evolving challenges of drug and insecticide resistance, changes in the malaria landscape, and aspirations for elimination will all require new interventions and new science.
