NIAID Scientists’ Zika Virus Imaging Project Highlighted in Virology

Zika virus

A NIAID study of the cytoarchitecture of Zika virus infection is highlighted online in Virology and will be featured in the January 15 edition for its stunning 3D electron tomograms and potential research implications. The scientists used mosquito and human cells to view Zika virus infection and replication. They unexpectedly found small circular structures within larger spheres common to replication of flaviviruses, like Zika. Additional study is needed but the researchers believe the smaller structures could be the site where the virus replicates in the cells, providing a target for countermeasures.
