Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (Pink Book) Land-Based Course



Faculty from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases will present a live, comprehensive review of immunization principles, as well as vaccine-preventable diseases and the recommended vaccines to prevent them. This course will feature the most up-to-date immunization information from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). There is no charge for attendees, but seating is limited to the first 250 registrants. Various CE will be offered.

Faculty from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases will present a live, comprehensive review of immunization principles, as well as vaccine-preventable diseases and the recommended vaccines to prevent them. The 2.5-day course will feature the most up-to-date immunization information from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Who should attend: 
The course is designed for anyone seeking the most comprehensive and current knowledge of immunization, including physicians, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, immunization providers, program managers, and nursing and medical students. Participants should have a basic understanding of biology and immunization.

Objectives:
After attending this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the difference between active and passive immunity.
  • List two characteristics of live, attenuated vaccines.
  • List two characteristics of inactivated vaccines.
  • For each vaccine-preventable disease, identify those for whom routine immunization is recommended.
  • For each vaccine-preventable disease, describe characteristics of the vaccine used to prevent the disease.
  • Describe an emerging immunization issue.
  • Locate resources relevant to current immunization practice.
  • Implement disease detection and prevention health care services (e.g., smoking cessation, weight reduction, diabetes screening, blood pressure screening, immunization services) to prevent health problems and maintain health.

The course is free to attend. Please fill out the registration form and e-mail it to izlearn@cdc.gov. Registration for this course will close May 1, 2019.
Lunch will not be provided during the course. There are several options for lunch within walking distance of CDC’s Roybal campus, including the restaurants of Emory Point and a small café within CDC.  
Dates and times:
May 28, 2019 (1:00–5:00 ET) Check-in begins at 12:00
Topics covered include principles of vaccination, general best practice guidelines for immunization, vaccine storage and handling, vaccine administration, and vaccine safety (CE provided).

May 29, 2019 (8:00–5:15 ET)
Topics covered will include Haemophilus influenzae type b, pneumococcal, hepatitis A, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis b, rotavirus, varicella, zoster, HPV, and meningococcal diseases and the recommended vaccines to prevent them (CE provided).
May 30, 2019 (8:00–5:00 ET)
Topics covered will include vaccine communication, influenza, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis diseases and the recommended vaccines to prevent them (CE provided).

The course will close with program operations topics: Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) history, function, and procedures, quality assurance in immunization, the public health role in assuring the quality of vaccine storage and handling, and a topic to be determined (no CE provided).

Continuing Education:
Fourteen hours of free CE will be offered for a variety of health care professionals. Please note that special presentations will be offered during the second half of the last day that are not part of the CE course content. Participants must attend all CE sessions through noon on May 30 to receive CE.

Hotel accommodations:
Hotel choices located relatively close to the course facility. We encourage you to make reservations for your trip as soon as possible. Please note that parking at CDC Roybal campus is extremely limited and we advise you to make alternative transportation plans to and from the course. There is no shuttle service to CDC campus but other options include requesting that the hotel provide a group shuttle ride (check for availability prior to booking), public transportation, or taxi.
