Understanding the Intersection of Young Age, Mucosal Injury, and HIV Susceptibility | Abstract

AIDS is the leading cause of death for adolescents in Africa and the second leading cause of death among adolescents globally. To understand the anatomical and physiological factors that may influence HIV susceptibility in this population, NIH scientists review the epidemiology of HIV infection and violence in adolescents and the available basic science. Then the researchers highlight the most critical knowledge gaps that need to be filled to design HIV prevention strategies that are safe and effective for adolescents.
