Peer inside a heavy-metal fruit fly brain
(VISUALIZATION BY PHILIPP SCHLEGEL. DROSOPHILA CONNECTOMICS GROUP)
Here’s a high-resolution picture of a fly brain to kick off your Friday. Researchers captured the snapshot — published in Cell — with the help of high-speed electron microscopes. The scientists infused heavy metals that seep into neuron membranes and synapses in adult fruit fly brains. Then, they hit sections of the brain with an electron beam — which passed through everything but the spots lined with heavy metals — and snapped pictures using custom microscopy systems. More than 20 research groups are now using the data produced to scour the secrets of the fly brain.
