BMC Immunology is currently accepting manuscripts for a new thematic series entitled "Cancer Immunotherapy and Vaccines". The aim of the series is to bring together the latest advances in biological and computational research, looking broadly at the basic biological aspects of immunotherapy, emerging immunotherapies (both prophylactic and preventive) and different vaccination approaches. In his blog, guest editor Francesco Pappalardo gives an introduction to the series and discusses the progress and the difficulties faced by researchers in the field.
The deadline for submission of manuscripts is 30th November 2017. For more information, visit the BMC Immunology website.

BMC Oral Health is launching a section dedicated to the world of Digital Dentistry. It will collect high quality original research articles, clinical studies, technical advances, and case reports focused on the different areas of Digital Dentistry.
You can read the first article, authored by section editor Dr Francesco Mangano, here. Dr Mangano has also written blog to introduce the series.

BMC Medicine’s new special thematic collection on landmark oncology trials includes carefully selected articles from invited experts on landmark trials. These trials either had the most substantial influence on the clinical practice or provided critical evidence that enhanced understanding in the field. The collection will also feature current topics in the trial design.
Read the launch editorial by editorial board members Prof. Helena Earl, Prof. Stefano Molica, and Prof. Piotr Rutkowski and be sure to sign up for article alerts to keep up to date with new research in this collection.

Porcine Health Management is now indexed in PubMed Central and all articles will automatically appear in PubMed and PubMed Central within 24 hours of publication.
PubMed Central is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine.

Recent events
Yi Xie, professor of chemistry at the University of Science and Technology of China, has received the fourth Tsinghua University Press-Springer Nano Research Award. The award ceremony took place at the 2017 Sino-US Nano Forum, held from 26-28 May 2017 in Beijing, China. Representatives from Tsinghua University Press and Springer Nature presented the award certificate and medal to the scientist.
Yi Xie’s research on inorganic functional solids with modulated electron and phonon structures has contributed significantly to the field of inorganic solid state chemistry at the nanoscale. In particular, Yi Xie has made groundbreaking advances in fundamental problems of unconventional semiconductors a few atoms thick, which find promising applications in energy conversion.

18th May was Fascination of Plants Day. To celebrate the day, Springer Nature has put together a selection of articles from BioMed Central, Springer, and Nature Research. Take a look through our selected collection here.
Articles from BioMed Central and Springer Open journals can be found here.

BioMed Central attended the 4th International Clinical Trials Methodology Conference (ICTMC) and the 38th Annual meeting for the Society for Clinical Trials (SCT) in Liverpool at the beginning of May.
This was the first time that the biannual ICTMC had been combined with the SCT meeting to provide a platform for the discussion of topics covering every stage of clinical trial methodology. Emma Cookson, editor for the BMC Series, looks back at some of the highlights in her blog.

BMC Genetics recently attended the Chromatin and Epigenetics EMBO Conference in Heidelberg, Germany. Held every two years, it provides a ‘hub’ for researchers to present their work and share ideas. Alison Cuff, editor for BMC Plant Biology, presents some of the highlights of the event in her blog.

A new model for assessing real-time risk of a Zika virus epidemic in the United States is described in research published in BMC Infectious Diseases. The computer simulation, based on data from Texas including population dynamics, historical infection rates, socioeconomics, and mosquito density, is designed to help policymakers gauge the underlying epidemic threat as cases first appear in US cities.
The research was reported by the international media, particularly in the US and Brazil. Outlets reporting the story included Globo.comInfection Control Today and Science Daily.

The number of people requiring palliative care over the next 25 years is likely to increase substantially, requiring a shift in healthcare priorities in England and Wales, according to research published in BMC Medicine.
The research was widely covered by both national and international media with the majority of coverage in the UK, where it was reported by outlets including The Times (print), The GuardianThe Daily MailThe IndependentThe Sun and The Huffington Post. In the US it was covered by outlets including Health Medicine Network and Environmental Nutrition.

Enforcing rules about bedtimes could help children get the sleep they need on weekdays, according to research published in BMC Public Health. The study found that when parents actively enforce a bedtime during the week, their children were more likely to meet established sleep guidelines. Neither encouraging nor enforcing a bedtime had an effect on sleep at the weekend.
The research was covered by The Daily Mail in the UK and Business Standard in India. It was also syndicated widely in the US and covered by CTV News in Canada.

Promoting young people’s levels of well-being and making them aware of the harms of smoking and drinking could keep them away from alcohol and cigarettes, according to a study published in BMC Public Health. Researchers at UCL found that young people who were happier and more aware of the harms of alcohol and cigarettes were more likely to never drink or smoke than those who were less aware or perceived themselves as less happy.
The research was reported by national and international media. In the UK, it was covered by outlets including The Daily Mail. It was also reported by O Globo in Brazil, Business Standard in India and Health Medicine Network in the US.
