Funding and Research Opportunities
NIH has launched a new program, the Investigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndrome (INCLUDE) Project to focus on the critical health needs of individuals with Down syndrome. The initiative, launched in support of a Congressional directive in the fiscal year 2018 Omnibus Appropriations, aims to improve the health, well-being, and neurodevelopment of individuals with Down syndrome, as well as their risk and resilience to common diseases that they share with individuals who do not have Down syndrome. Congenital heart defects occur in about 50% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome, and links between abnormal development of the brain and heart have been found in many other congenital disorders. In part because of these connections, NHLBI Director Dr. Gary Gibbons is serving as co-chair of the INCLUDE steering committee.
NHLBI invites research grant applications to advance the INCLUDE Project. Eligible applications will address one or more of the following research objectives: (1) Targeted, high risk high reward basic science studies in the areas relevant to Down syndrome; (2) Molecular snapshot of Down syndrome through a cohort study; (3) Inclusive clinical research for individuals with Down syndrome.
Requests must be received by 5:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (P.D.T.) on July 23, 2018 for funding in FY 2018.
