The emergence of a new multidrug-resistant bacterial strain is dangerous and frightening.  For the first time, the bacterial gene mcr-1, which confers resistance to the “antibiotic of last resort,” colistin, was found in a bacterium isolated from a patient in the United States. The mcr-1 containing plasmid can help spread colistin resistance rapidly to other bacteria, including those already resistant to all other available antibiotics. To fight this new bacteria, BARDA has already has made investments to develop new antibiotics.  Learn More >>
