FDA, in Collaboration with AMA, Releases Continuing Medical Education Video about the Nutrition Facts Label
June 22, 2016
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in collaboration with the American Medical Association (AMA), announced a continuing medical education (CME) video for physicians about using the Nutrition Facts Label (NFL) to help patients make healthful eating choices.
Although physicians may be knowledgeable about nutrition’s role in health, they may not be familiar with the role of the NFL in the context of making healthy food choices and often have limited time available to counsel patients on the use of this tool. The video is designed to educate physicians about the NFL, give practical strategies for discussing nutrition with their patients, and better equip them to offer guidance that is important for general health, combatting obesity, and reducing the risk of other chronic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease.
To view the CME video on the NFL, visit FDA’s Food Safety and Nutrition Resources for Healthcare Professionals page. The video and companion patient educational materials are available for all healthcare professionals to access. The CME video is also available for anyone to access on AMA’s Education Center website. Interested physicians can earn one AMA Physician’s Recognition Award PRA Category 1 CME creditTM.

Note: FDA has issued final changes to update the Nutrition Facts Label for packaged foods. For more information, see Changes to the Nutrition Facts Label.
