NEW FUNDING TO SUPPORT CURING HEP C AMONG PEOPLE OF COLOR LIVING WITH HIV
May 27, 2016 • By Corinna Dan, R.N., M.P.H., Viral Hepatitis Policy Advisor, Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau recently announced two funding opportunity announcements (FOAs), supported with resources from the Secretary’s Minority AIDS Initiative Fund, that will support the development of comprehensive jurisdiction-level hepatitis C (HCV) screening, care, and treatment systems for HIV/HCV coinfected people of color.
Between 20-25% of people living with HIV in the United States are coinfected with HCV. HIV hastens the progression of HCV-related liver disease and liver disease is now one of the leading causes of death among people living with HIV in this country.
HAB’s new three-year program will support up to two Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part A current grant recipients and up to two RWHAP Part B current grant recipients to increase jurisdiction-level capacity to provide comprehensive screening, care, and treatment for hepatitis C (HCV) among HIV/HCV coinfected RWHAP clients and thus, increase numbers of HIV/HCV coinfected people who are diagnosed, treated, and cured of HCV infection. The second FOA will support an Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center (ETAC) that will support the funded jurisdictions.
