Changes to This Summary (05/27/2016)
The PDQ cancer information summaries are reviewed regularly and updated as new information becomes available. This section describes the latest changes made to this summary as of the date above.
Added text about a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials and observational studies that was done to assess the treatment of Helicobacter pylori with curative regimens for three different clinical scenarios: asymptomatic patients, patients with atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia, and patients who have had endoscopic treatment for cancer (cited Lee et al. as reference 20).
Added text to state that the authors found 24 eligible studies with 715 incidences of gastric cancer among 48,000 individuals in 340,000 person-years of follow-up; individuals with eradication treatment for H. pylori had a lower incidence of gastric cancer, and treatment was associated with substantially lower risk in individuals who had asymptomatic infection and in individuals after endoscopic resection of gastric cancer. Also added text to state that the results may have implications for the treatment of some subgroups of individuals with particularly high risk, such as Asian immigrant populations in the United States and individuals with underlying gastric mucosal disease; or to help prevent recurrent gastric cancer.
