If you’re planning a holiday trip, you may be concerned about travel-related health issues like jet lag, sunburn, motion sickness, or traveler’s diarrhea. Some people seek out complementary health approaches for these types of problems. And in a few instances, such as the use of melatonin for jet lag and probiotics for prevention of traveler’s diarrhea, these approaches may help.

However, in other cases, complementary approaches haven’t been found to be useful. For example, complementary approaches such as acupressure and magnets haven’t been shown to relieve motion sickness.

Using complementary approaches instead of conventional ones could be harmful in some situations. For example, using unproven herbal products to protect yourself from the sun instead of using sunscreen could leave you with a nasty sunburn.
