CDC Expert Discusses Sepsis Tracking and Prevention Tools in new ASTHO Podcast

CDC’s Anthony Fiore, MD, MPH, Chief of the Epidemiology Research and Innovations Branch, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, is featured in a new Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) Public Health Review podcast episode, A Matter of Life and Death: How States Are Tackling Sepsis as Public Policy.

The episode calls attention to CDC’s work to tackle sepsis, a leading cause of death and severe illness that is treatable if recognized early and potentially preventable. In an interview with Robert Johnson, Dr. Fiore highlights the agency’s Get Ahead of Sepsis educational effort, which seeks to raise awareness of sepsis among healthcare professionals, patients, and families. Fiore also discusses CDC clinical tools to help track sepsis, such as the Hospital Toolkit for Adult Sepsis Surveillance, that healthcare facilities can use to assess adult incidence. Fiore shares tips for how public health practitioners and state and local health departments can help educate other healthcare organizations and the public and easily implement sepsis prevention as part of their existing work.

Sepsis Awareness Month 2019

The episode also includes a case study on New York State’s response to sepsis in interviews with Howard Zucker, MD, JD, Commissioner of Health for New York State and Ciaran Staunton, Co-Founder of the Rory Staunton Foundation for Sepsis Prevention.
