Fall Prevention Awareness Day

Stand STEADI to Prevent Falls

CDC continues to stand STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries) as we observe Fall Prevention Awareness Day, on the first day of fall, Monday, September 23, 2019. As part of the observance this year, CDC is introducing new and updated resources to assist nationwide fall prevention efforts

New and Updated Resources

Older Adult Falls Maps: CDC has created three interactive maps based on older adult (age 65+) falls data. Learn and compare the mortality rate, falls costs, and percent of older adults reporting falls by state.
  • Deaths from Older Adult Falls: Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among older adults—and the age-adjusted rate of fall deaths is increasing. Learn the mortality rate from older adult falls in your state.
  • Costs of Older Adult Falls: Falls are costly. Each year about $50 billion is spent on non-fatal fall injuries and $754 million is spent on fatal injuries. This map lets you compare older adult falls cost by state. Hover over a state to reveal its total falls cost and a breakdown of Medicare, Medicaid, and private/out-of-pocket costs.
  • Older Adult Falls Reported by State: In the US, one in four older adults (about 30%) report falling each year. Learn the percentage of older adult falls reported in your state and across the country.

Updated STEADI Algorithm: The Algorithm for Fall Risk Screening, Assessment, and Intervention has been updated to better fit clinician’s needs. This tool walks healthcare providers through assessing a patient’s fall risk, educating patients, selecting appropriate interventions, and patient follow-up.
  • Updated Wall Chart: The Integrating Fall Prevention into Practice wall chart helps healthcare providers determine who in their practice will be responsible for conducting fall risk assessments, delivering interventions, and providing education to older patients.

STAND STEADI Video Series: The STAND STEADI video series highlights how healthcare providers and public health professionals across the country are using CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) tools and educational materials. Pharmacists, physical therapists, hospitals, and health departments are working to prevent falls among community-dwelling older adults. New videos in the series include:

Training a Multidisciplinary Team for Fall Prevention: Mercer University is using CDC’s STEADI resources to train a multidisciplinary team to screen, assess, and intervene to reduce older adult falls

Fall Prevention—A Focus on Inpatient Discharge: The University of California, San Francisco is using the STEADI initiative to identify older adults who may be at risk for a fall after being discharged from the hospital. When hospital staff identify older adult patients at risk for falls, staff can plan for post-hospital care earlier and help reduce fall related readmissions.
