Oral care—Tips for caregivers

Order Free Publications
Caregivers play an important role in helping maintain their care partner’s oral health. Daily oral health care can help prevent eating difficulties, digestive problems and more dental complications down the road.
Here are some tips caregivers can use to help with oral health:
  • Help the older person brush twice a day with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use a toothbrush with a small head, which makes it easier to clean around the back teeth.
  • Angle the bristles toward the gumline so they clean between the gums and teeth.
  • Brush gently using small circular motions.
  • Brush all sides of each tooth.
  • Brush the tongue.
  • Floss once a day.
  • See a dentist for regular check-ups.
