Deaths related to opioid misuse continues to rise in the U.S. Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids.[1] Suicide rates are also on the rise. Every day, approximately 123 Americans take their own life.[2] Substance use researchers are finding that there may be a relationship between suicidology and opioid misuse, and deaths deemed as unintentional opioid overdoses may be intentional suicides. In April 2018, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported that suicide may be a silent contributor to opioid overdose deaths.[3] Understanding the relationship between intentional – suicide – and unintentional – accidental overdose – can create opportunities for preventionists at the state and local level to implement more effective prevention strategies and save lives.
This first webinar in the NPW 2019 webinar series will feature a discussion about the relationship and intersection between these two growing health public challenges and what prevention strategies and approaches can be used to address them at the national and state level.
