NCCIH Research Priorities Highlighted at APS 2016, May 11 to 14

NCCIH priorities in pain research and cutting-edge pain management research will be highlighted at the 2016 American Pain Society (APS) annual meeting, held from May 11 to May 14 in Austin, Texas. This year NCCIH is pleased to sponsor two scientific sessions focused on its high-priority research areas:

• Session 301, titled Role of Cannabinoids in Chronic Pain—Translational Approaches.This session, scheduled for Thursday, May 12, and organized in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will assess the potential of exploiting the cannabinoid system for the development of treatments for chronic pain.
• Session 401, titled Can Complementary and Integrative Approaches for Pain Management Engage Brain Circuitry of Endogenous Pain Modulation? This session, scheduled for Friday, May 13, will explore innovative neuroscience research directions to harness and optimize the responses in neural circuits to influence endogenous pain modulation. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with NCCIH program staff and discuss NCCIH research priorities and current funding announcements.

In keeping with the Center’s commitment to workforce development, NCCIH program staff will also participate in the Early Career Forum, where they will engage and facilitate discussions with pain researchers and clinician investigators on a variety of career development strategies. In addition, they will provide guidance to APS investigators at the National Institutes of Health Workshop on Successful Grant Writing and Funding Opportunities in Pain Research (W700).
