On May 7, 2019, CDC released a Vital Signs report showing that pregnancy-related deaths happen before, during, and up to a year after delivery. This report provides data from CDC’s Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS) and from state Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs). It looks at leading causes of death throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period and highlights potential strategies MMRCs have identified to prevent future deaths.
