Today: Reddit “Ask Me Anything” about the future of precision medicine

WHAT: This year marks the 15th anniversary of the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, and the discovery of the DNA double helix structure in 1953, which we celebrate through a nationally-recognized DNA Day on April 25. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is celebrating in a big way! We're kicking off a National DNA Day Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) series - starting today - with NIH's very own director, Dr. Francis Collins!

As NIH Director, Dr. Collins leads the NIH’s efforts to build innovative research programs, such as the All of Us Research Program. The program is assembling the world’s largest library of genetic, biometric and health data from research volunteers - the data available to scientists worldwide.  Dr. Collins’ AMA will cover such topics as his experiences during the Human Genome Project and the future of precision medicine, but ask him anything - starting now!

WHO: Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., director of NIH

WHEN: Ask your questions starting at 8 a.m. Eastern today. At 2 p.m., Dr. Collins will join the conversation to answer them!

HOW: Log into or sign up for a free Reddit account. Ask your questions here.

  • Monday, April 23, 1-3 p.m. ET: Personal genetics and you
  • Tuesday, April 24, 1-3 p.m. ET: Ancient DNA and conservation genomics
  • Wednesday, April 25, 1-3 p.m. ET: Ask a genetic counselor
  • Thursday, April 26, 1-3 p.m. ET: The Human Cell Atlas
  • Friday, April 27, 1-3 p.m. ET: The wonderful world of microbes
Full information on each individual AMA can be found here!

REDDIT AMAs EXPLAINED: A Reddit AMA is an opportunity to ask interesting individuals questions about anything - and everything! AMAs are an interactive experience - ask questions or "up-vote" your favorites, and gain insight into the lives and work of NIH scientists.
