Percentages (25%) and ratios (1in 4) are often used to explain the likelihood or numeric probability of a health risk or event. However, using numbers alone can be more confusing than helpful to many people. To help make probabilities easier to understand, use common, words, and visuals when explaining a health risk.
Probability words and visuals are covered in Part D of the CDC’s Clear Communication Index . Here’s an example of how to use words and visuals to display numbers or data:
