Dr. Beth Barr, DrPH, CDC's new Country and DGHT* Director in Zimbabwe, applauds Zimbabwe’s progress to reduce HIV and AIDS, but cautions against complacency, in a radio interview with the Voice of America. “There is absolutely no room for complacency when HIV still causes over 100 deaths a day, just in Zimbabwe,” said Barr, who has fought HIV for more than 15 years in several African countries, including Botswana, Malawi and Tanzania.
In the interview, Barr talks about her efforts leading CDC and Division of Global HIV & TB* activities in Zimbabwe, including our efforts to reduce HIV and AIDS prevalence, expand prevention, fight stigma, and increase access to treatment. She also discusses Zimbabwe’s efforts to work towards the 90-90- 90 strategy – the ambitious UNAIDS target to have 90% of people living with HIV know their status, have 90% of people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy, and enable those 90% on treatment to have a reduced viral load by the year 2020.
