Long-term culture of P. vivax is possible in the RBCs of Saimiri boliviensis.
2.5 billion people live at risk of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Inability to grow this parasite in the laboratory limits vivax malaria drug and vaccine development. Saimiri boliviensis is recognized as receptive to P. vivax infection. Using S. boliviensis blood, we have succeeded in long-term culture of P. vivax collected in rural Madagascar. This system avoids whole animal infections and introduces new capacity for P. vivax laboratory studies.
