SCRUPULOSITY:
When Religious Observance and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Collide

Sometimes, religious behaviors become intertwined with mental disorders. Do you know how to discern the difference? And where to turn for help?

Scrupulosity is often defined as a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involving religious or moral obsessions. Individuals with scrupulosity are overly concerned that something they thought or did might be a sin or other violation of religious or moral doctrine.

In our first webinar for the New Year, we are pleased to introduce you to David H. Rosmarin, Ph.D., ABPP, who
serves as the director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital, founder and director of the Center for Anxiety, as well as an assistant professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy, integration of spirituality/religion into psychosocial treatment for psychiatric disorders, and research on spirituality and mental health.

Dr. Rosmarin will help us understand scrupulosity, and how it can be distinguished from normative religious practices and beliefs.  He will also review treatments for this form of OCD, and how faith and community leaders can work withmental health professionals in the treatment process.

Finally, Dr. Rosmarin will apply some lessons learned from research and clinical literature about scrupulosity to other mental disorders.

Please mark your calendars and let's get started!
