Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee November 2019 Recap
In November 2019, the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC) met to discuss ongoing topics of interest, including the clinical laboratory workforce and electronic laboratory communication and interoperability.

For the first time in the 27 years of CLIAC’s existence, an extended public comment session was held, during which the public was specifically invited to provide comments in response to three questions previously published in the Federal Register. The questions were related to the need for updating the CLIA regulations and providing guidance to clinical and public health laboratories as a result of emerging technology and evolving laboratory practices.

CLIAC deliberated on the comments and made five recommendations, which will inform the CLIA work of CDC, the Centers for Medicare &Medicaid Services, and the Food and Drug Administration going forward, and guide a new workgroup that will report back to CLIAC. The input from CLIAC will assist the agencies with prioritization of the questions for the workgroup at the April 2020 CLIAC Meeting (April 16–17) to be hosted by the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Maryland.
