The Abscopal Effect as a Treatment for Cancer
An illustration of the abscopal effect, which occurs when treating a single tumor with radiation alone or with other treatments causes other tumors in the body to shrink. In people with cancer, the abscopal effect occurs when radiation—or other type of local therapy—not only shrinks a targeted tumor but also shrinks untreated tumors in the body.
