Featured article: Use of melatonin in oral health and as dental premedication

Anxiety is a common problem in dentistry, with effects on the choice and efficacy of treatment. Melatonin has good potential to be used in this field as an alternative to benzodiazepines, as it may induce a natural sleepiness and improve sedation. In this article, Perez-Heredia et al. review what is known about the use of melatonin in oral health and as dental premedication in anxious patients.

Theodore J Abatzopoulos

Theodore Abaztopoulos is Professor in the Department of Genetics, Development and Molecular Biology School of Biology, Faculty of Science, A.U.Th. His research interests include the study of the biology and evolutionary genetics of aquatic organisms focusing on temporary brackish/hypersaline ecosystems and their biodiversity. His laboratory emphasizes genetic characterization, development of markers, molecular systematics, phylogeography and phylogenetics ofanostracans (Artemia and Branchinella spinosa), Brachionus rotifers, microalgaeand various fish (Silurus spp., Aphanius fasciatus, Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata).
