Invasive Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Infections Associated with Exposure to Heater-Cooler Units during Cardiac Surgery

Recent reports suggest that heater-cooler units, typically used during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, are putting patients at risk for invasive nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) infections.

To discuss this issue, CDC is offering a free webinar featuring an expert panel including Dr. Charles L. Daley, Chief of the Division of Mycobacterial and Respiratory Infections at National Jewish Health;Dr. Daniel J. Diekema, Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine; Dr. Keith B. Allen, Director of Research, Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Mid America Heart and Lung Surgeons; Dr. Joseph Perz, CDC Team Leader for Quality Standards and Safety in the Prevention and Response Branch; and Dr. Michael Bell, Deputy Director of the Division of Health Quality and Promotion at the CDC.
 Panel members will discuss:
  • Evidence linking invasive NTM infections and exposure to heater-cooler units during cardiac surgery
  • Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for invasive NTM infections, and
  • Steps to identify patients at risk and mitigate risk to patients
