On today’s Safe Healthcare Blog, CDC’s Dr. Jonathan Mermin discusses what healthcare providers can do to slow gonorrhea’s growing resistance to first-line antibiotics. New data, released in CDC’s MMWR on July 15, show signs of resistance to azithromycin, one of the two remaining drugs available to treat the sexually transmitted disease. There are very limited options for treating gonorrhea, so if resistance to azithromycin continues to develop, our ability to cure patients will diminish.
