The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with weather forecasters already predicting 10 to 16 major storms. But what does that mean for you? If you live or are traveling to the east coast, have a family emergency plan, shelter needs and insurance information handy.
To be even more prepared, get the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) app available for download on iTunes or Google Play. The app features include:
- Weather Alerts: Users can sign up for National Weather Service alerts for up to five different U.S. locations to stay updated on severe weather forecasts impacting family and friends.
- Preparedness Information: Users can receive tips to survive natural disasters and customize their emergency checklist. Families can also store their emergency meeting places in the app for quick access during an event.
- Safety Reminders: The app’s newest feature enables users to set reminders that will alert them when it’s time to change smoke alarm batteries, replenish emergency supplies kits, and practice their family’s emergency communications plan.
- Disaster Resources: If a disaster occurs, users can search for open shelters and Disaster Recovery Centers in their area.
