Scientists at the NIAID-funded Structural Genomics Centers for Infectious Diseases recently mapped their 500th protein structure, reaching an important milestone. These Centers apply high-throughput structural biology technologies to characterize the 3-D atomic structure of targeted proteins from the NIAID Category A-C priority lists and organisms that cause emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
These structures, which are made available to the scientific community through the NIH-supported Protein Data Bank, can lead to new treatments and diagnostics for diseases such as cholera, the plague, and H1N1 influenza.
