Program Overview: The NCCN Patient Safety Summit has been designed to summarize and disseminate relevant research findings and evidence-based information so participants may affect change in the realm of oncology patient safety within their own organizations. The NCCN 2010 Patient Safety Summit will provide an opportunity for clinical, administrative, regulatory, and industry professionals to discuss best practices in oncology patient safety as well as to disseminate advances in oncology patient safety systems and processes.
Patient safety has long been recognized as an integral component of quality medical care. In the past decade, the spotlight on safety in medicine has only become brighter, with the publication of countless reports from the Institute of Medicine, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and the National Patient Safety Foundation, among others. The stakes are especially high in oncology, and avoiding error is imperative in delivering radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and other high-risk treatments. More specifically, earlier this year The New York Times ran a series of articles about treatment errors that have occurred in radiation therapy, which has further intensified discussions about the need to improve safety for cancer patients.
The growing attention to oncology patient safety and medical error by the media and others requires a timely and well-considered plan of action from the oncology community and its stakeholders.
