February 2020 - CDC Healthy Schools Highlights

CDC Announcements
• In conjunction with CDC Healthy Schools and other partners, the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) has just released a new fact sheet for teachers to help keep students active during the school day. A previously released NCCOR fact sheet shows PE teachers how to use the Youth Compendium to build their curricula.

State Highlights

• Washington State, in collaboration with Washington State ASCD, proclaimed January as Whole Child Month. The Whole Child approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children.

Non-Governmental Organizations Highlights

• The Society for Public Health Education developed Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and School Health: Addressing SEL through the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Framework. This guide provides school health staff and school health teams with initial support for integrating SEL competencies into the WSCC model through a series of simple handouts and suggested tools.
