Apply by the 14th for the Butler-Williams Scholars Program

Are you a post-doc looking to establish your career in aging research? Or a junior faculty member looking to expand your career options? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then the time is now to apply for the 2020 NIA Butler-Williams Scholars Program!
The Butler-Williams (B-W) Scholars program gives early career investigators a unique opportunity to engage with other researchers interested in the field of aging, learn about NIA science, discuss funding opportunities with NIA staff, and sharpen grant writing skills. Researchers who are planning a career development award or their first R01 will find it well-tuned to their needs. Anyone interested in aging research is encouraged to apply.
The B-W Scholars program is funded through the NIA Office of Special Populations, which works to strengthen the understanding of health disparities in aging research and mentor a diverse next generation of scientists.

Immersive, intensive and interactive

The week-long B-W Scholars program is an intensive, immersive experience featuring seminars, lectures and informal small group discussions. It’s also a chance to interact with senior NIH and NIA leaders, scientific staff and senior extramural researchers.
The 2020 B-W Scholars program curriculum includes:
  • Basic biology of aging
  • Neuroscience of aging and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Behavioral and social science research
  • Geriatrics and clinical gerontology
  • Minority health and health disparities
  • Consultations on developing research interests
  • Preparing and submitting research grant applications

An instant national network

Over the years, B-W Scholar alumni have advanced to successful careers in aging, obtained independent NIH funding and assumed significant leadership roles. Past B-W scholars collaborate across the nation and network with fellow investigators to create a dynamic tapestry of research interests and advancing research careers.

Testimonials from past B-W Scholars:

The B-W Scholars program offers a strong career foundation and the opportunity for lasting connections, but don’t take our word for it! Here are a few testimonials from past B-W Scholars:
“It was a wonderful experience hearing about current research and getting insight into the grant-writing system. Just being surrounded by new colleagues who are excited about aging research and who come from such diverse backgrounds was incredible.”
“I'm early career, but have been involved in aging research from the start. I really appreciated the opportunity to come to the NIA and be surrounded by so many people who care so strongly about aging research.”
What a wonderful opportunity this program was for me. I will strongly encourage my junior colleagues and my future trainees to apply. Please keep it going!”
