CDC - Activities - Vaccine Safety
Vaccine Safety Monitoring Activities
ISO has a three-part mission that supports CDC's leadership role:
- To perform high-quality vaccine safety research.
- To assess causality and preventable risk factors.
- To identify adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) through public health surveillance.
ISO conducts six primary vaccine safety activities:
CISA studies the pathophysiology of adverse events following immunization, identifies risk factors, and develop guidance to help doctors.
In the event of a threat of disease outbreak in which a mass vaccination campaign is needed, emergency preparedness activities are activated to ensure that vaccines remain safe.
VAERS is a national reporting system. VAERS serves as an early-warning system to detect medical problems that may be related to vaccines.
VSD conducts near real-time surveillance of adverse events potentially associated with new vaccines or changes in immunization schedules.
