Summary of Recommendations / Supporting Documents

This recommendation reaffirms the Task Force's 2003 recommendation on Counseling to Prevent Tobacco Use and Tobacco-Caused Disease, with respect to counseling of adults and pregnant women. in 2003, the Task Force found the evidence insufficient to recommend for or against counseling of children and adolescents. Summary of Recommendations
The USPSTF recommends that clinicians ask all adults about tobacco use and provide tobacco cessation interventions for those who use tobacco products.
Grade: A recommendation.
The USPSTF recommends that clinicians ask all pregnant women about tobacco use and provide augmented, pregnancy-tailored counseling for those who smoke.
Grade: A recommendation.
