Suicide attempts are six times more common among transgender youth than heterosexual peers
Gay, bisexual, and transgender young people are at a higher risk of suicide attempts than their heterosexual peers, according to a new reviewthat compiled data from 35 studies. Transgender youths were nearly six times as likely to attempt suicide as their heterosexual peers, while gay and bisexual youths were more than three times as likely. The authors say there's a need for public awareness efforts and a careful study of the best ways to support young people.
On a related note: The Trevor Project, a nonprofit focused on suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth, just released a progress report on how California schools are complying with a 2016 state law that requires suicide prevention policies for grades 7 to 12. The report states 86 percent of school districts had a suicide prevention policy, but the bulk of districts without a policy were in rural areas or smaller than average.
