Staying Safe After Hurricane Florence, 2018
Follow these tips to keep yourself and your family safe when returning home after Hurricane Florence.
Always throw away food that may have come in contact with flood or storm water. Also dispose of perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly or that have an unusual odor, color, or texture. Remember, unsafe food can make you sick even if it looks, smells, and tastes normal. When in doubt, throw it out!
Do not use water you suspect or have been told is contaminated to wash dishes, brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, wash your hands, make ice, or make baby formula. Safe water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene includes bottled, boiled, or treated water. Your state, local, or tribal health department can make specific recommendations for boiling or treating water in your area.
When returning to your home be aware that flood water may contain sewage and other hazards. Keep children and pets out of the affected area until cleanup has been completed. Always wash with soap and clean water after coming in contact with flood water or items contaminated with flood water.
It is normal to feel strong emotions like fear, grief, or sadness after a natural disaster. The Disaster Distress Helpline provides 24/7, year-round crisis counseling and support. Call 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746.
Children, in particular, may feel upset or have other strong emotions after an emergency. Some children react right away, while others may show signs of difficulty much later. How children react and common signs of distress can both vary according to age. Knowing how to help children cope after an emergency can keep them healthy in future emergencies.
