 | It takes three. Three mutations in a cancer-causing gene to kick off the unfettered cell processes that cascade into disease. A new study controversially claims that two out of three of those mutations are random chance—not inherited from parents or driven by environmental exposures. Cancer mutations are largely just a glitch in the DNA sequence that happens as cells naturally divide throughout the life of a human.
