Hospitalization for pneumonia is defined as a first-listed diagnosis on the medical record of 480-486, as coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification. Rates were calculated using U.S. Census Bureau 2000-based postcensal civilian population estimates.
From 2000 to 2010, the hospitalization rate for pneumonia decreased by 20% for the total population. The rate decreased 30% among those aged 65–74 years, 31% among those aged 75–84 years, and 33% among those aged ≥85 years. Throughout the period, the rate of hospitalization for the <65 age="age" any="any" for="for" group.="group." group="group" lower="lower" other="other" p="p" rate="rate" substantially="substantially" than="than" the="the" was="was" years="years"> 65>
