The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says exercise can help, but it may not thwart osteoporosis entirely. The academy offers these suggestions for keeping your bones as healthy as possible:
- Get exercise every day, especially weight-bearing and strength-building exercises.
- Adhere to a healthy weight, making sure you aren't overweight or underweight.
- Don't smoke, limit alcohol intake and get plenty of vitamin D and calcium.
- If your doctor approves, take medication designed to strengthen bones.
