Dr. Ren Salerno, DLS Division Director, served as a panelist for the ACT for Better Diagnosis™ Campaign launch, sponsored by the Society for Improving Diagnostic Medicine (SIDM) at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on September 13, 2018. SIDM initiated the campaign to raise awareness about the need to improve diagnosis, increase the reliability of the diagnostic process, and to ensure the complex science of diagnosis is Accurate, Communicated, and Timely. Dr. Salerno communicated the importance of creating systems that encourage and incentivize laboratory physicians and scientists to be integrally involved in the diagnostic process. Other panelists included members fromAHRQ, MedStar Health, Women Heart, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies.

"One thing we’re trying to do at the CDC is encourage the lab to not look at itself just as a service provider…but to think of [test] samples as patients who need help, and ask the lab to get more involved in the diagnostic process – to get outside of the lab and work with clinicians…to help them figure out which is the best test to order."
