Malaria
The massive scale-up of malaria interventions from 2000–2015 saved more than 6.8 million lives and decreased the incidence of malaria by 18 percent globally between 2010 and 2016, according to the World Malaria Report 2017. However, malaria still killed an estimated 445,000 people in 2016, mainly children under 5 years of age in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the same year there were 216 million cases of the disease. The ever-evolving challenges of drug and insecticide resistance, changes in the malaria landscape, and aspirations for elimination will all require new interventions and new science.
