NIAID-Funded Scientists Identify Novel Vaccine Adjuvants

Scientists funded by NIAID’s Adjuvant Discovery Program have identified a new class of vaccine adjuvants (substances that improve the effectiveness of vaccines). Screening more than 160,000 potential adjuvant molecules revealed a series of compounds that act by a unique mechanism. These compounds do not stimulate the immune system on their own. However, when combined with a classical adjuvant, they improve vaccine responses by prolonging immune activation, experiments in human cells and a mouse model suggest. The findings are published in ACS Combinatorial Science.
