A Transformative Response

The Antibiotic Resistance Solutions Initiative will provide critical support to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. View the factsheets below for more information.
In fiscal year 2016, Congress appropriated $160 million for CDC to fight antibiotic resistance (AR), a testament to the urgent AR threat and highest levels of support for the ambitious public health actions outlined in the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria[PDF - 63 pages].
This is a substantial opportunity for state and local public health, academic, healthcare, and veterinary partners to expand capacity to detect and respond to AR threats in healthcare and communities, protect patients, and save lives. CDC plans to distribute the largest extramural portion of this funding to support all 50 state health departments, the six largest local health departments, and Puerto Rico. The AR Solutions Initiative will support comprehensive and coordinated public health action against AR across states, counties, and cities.
The $160 million marked for CDC will transform how CDC and public health partners combat and slow antibiotic resistance at all levels. The additional $40 million proposed in the fiscal year 2017 (FY17) budget will ensure the nation’s ability to stand up a full response faster, protecting Americans and today’s antibiotics from resistant germs
