Understanding Cancer and Bone Health Challenges in Aging Populations
Population aging is a defining global trend, driven by longer lives, improved survival, and lower fertility.[1] The global population aged 65 years and older is projected to increase substantially, reaching about 17% of the world's population by 2050.[1] Cancer disproportionately affects older adults: More than 60% of patients with cancer are aged 65 years or older.[2] Knowledge gaps remain regarding the safest and most effective treatments for this population.[2] Aging increases bone loss in both women and men.[3] Estrogen deficiency is a major cause of accelerated bone loss; in breast cancer, estrogen deprivation decreases bone mineral density and raises fracture incidence by 40% to 50%.[3] Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) suppresses estrogen production and likewise accelerates bone loss and increases fracture rates.[3] Cytotoxic chemotherapy may also adversely affect bone metabolism.[3]
