Eating healthy during the holidays

The holiday season can bring lots of rich, calorie-dense foods. High-calorie foods with little nutritional value, like potato chips, sugar-sweetened drinks, candy, baked goods, and alcoholic beverages, are sometimes called "empty calories."

Even with all of these calorie-dense foods around, you can make smart, nutritious food choices during the holidays!
  • Choose leaner cuts of meat, beans, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Avoid fried foods. Look for foods that are baked, broiled, braised, steamed, grilled, or sautéed instead.
  • Choose fresh fruit desserts over baked goods or candy.
  • Use fresh herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor your food.
