Programs promote healthier lifestyles for military youth
The Healthy Base Initiative (HBI), a Department of Defense project launched in 2013, promotes diet and exercise as a way to combat tobacco use, obesity and lack of physical activity among service members and their families. Fort Sill, an Army installation in Oklahoma and one of 14 pilot sites for HBI, introduced several programs focusing on healthy habits for service members, with some aimed at military children. These programs, often established in conjunction with schools, educate youth about the risks of engaging in unhealthy behaviors while actively promoting better eating habits and increasing physical fitness to improve quality of life.
