Brenda Guerra traveled from Kansas to UC San Diego to be the FIRST patient to participate in a groundbreaking safety trial testing stem cells for paralysis. Dr Joseph Ciacci, Neurosurgeon at UC San Diego Health System, is injecting stem cells into her spine to see if they can bridge the gap created by the injury and replace the severed or lost nerve connections. It worked in animals and doctors hope it will do the same in humans.
