During 40 years of federal service, Allen “Al” Middleton held many titles: deputy director, deputy assistant secretary of Defense, military treatment facility commander, assistant surgeon general and chief financial officer. Throughout it all Middleton, the first deputy director of the Defense Health Agency, has always made it a point to get to know those he’s worked with on a first-name basis.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is using art therapy to help military service members recover from the “invisible” wounds of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The NEA funds therapists in the military’s TBI treatment centers at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) on the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center campus in Bethesda, Maryland, and at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
