Fraudulent Products: Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)



FDA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) jointly launched the "Fraudulent STD Products Initiative," which targets over-the-counter products bought online or in retail stores that make unproven claims to prevent, cure, and/or treat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These products have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. These illegal products may pose significant public health risk since individuals could be inaccurately treated, leading to delays in getting medical help and increasing the possibility of spreading disease to a sexual partner. Consumers and health professionals should be warned there are no over-the-counter or online drugs or dietary supplements available to treat or prevent STDs. Appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment of STDs can only occur under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
